Safe sleep guidelines for infants

It is a tragedy when a child dies, and even worse when the death could be prevented. Recently, a number of children have died due to unsafe sleeping practices. These deaths could be easily avoided if sleeping practices were changed and if families had more information.

According to the City of Milwaukee Health Department, here are a few tips for safely putting a baby to sleep:

  • Put babies to sleep on their backs. Babies who sleep on their backs are safer.
  • Provide a separate but nearby sleeping environment. Babies should sleep in the same room as their parents but not the same bed. Sleeping in the same room allows parents to monitor the infants.
  • Never put a baby to sleep on a couch or a chair. A crib, bassinette or cradle that conforms to safety standards is recommended.
  • Make sure that the only item in the crib is a mattress, covered by a tight-fitting sheet. No bumper pads, blankets or toys.
  • Never lay a baby down on or next to a pillow. Infants can roll onto pillows and suffocate.
  • Dress the baby in a one-piece sleeper to keep them warm in winter.
  • Never smoke in a house where an infant or child lives.

The City of Milwaukee Milwaukee Health Department has a program for families in need of cribs for infants. The Cribs for Kids program provides families with a Pack 'n Play® and safe sleep education for families in Milwaukee.
