At Kids Matter, we know that family members often step up when incarceration, mental illness, substance abuse, or violence impacts a parent’s ability to safely raise their children. Too often, these children have experienced significant trauma that may result in emotional or behavioral challenges. Relative caregivers may also have unique needs linked to poor health, poverty, and lack of adequate access to information and services. We believe it is important that relative caregivers are provided with the knowledge and resources they need to provide the children they love with safety and stability.
