We are thrilled to welcome Thomas Romoeuf to the KIDS MATTER team as our newest AmeriCorps member! With a strong background in social welfare and international nonprofit work, Thomas brings a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective to our programs.
A Passion for Helping Children
In his new role as our Community and Outreach Specialist, Thomas will focus on recruiting volunteers for our Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) program. He will also lead specific research initiatives for KIDS MATTER, beginning with evidence-based programs that could be offered here in the future.
Thomas has experience in social welfare across multiple countries, and he is excited to learn more about the child welfare system in the U.S. and contribute to meaningful change. “Children are the most vulnerable part of the population, and I have always aspired to work in social welfare,” Thomas shares. “I have the feeling that I can help make a change and bring positivity to the community.”

From Europe to America: A Global Perspective
Before joining AmeriCorps, Thomas worked in various nonprofit roles across France, Greece, and Macedonia. With experience as a translator, grassroots lobbyist, project assistant, and even an online French teacher, he brings a diverse skillset to the KIDS MATTER team. Having moved to the U.S. full-time about a year and a half ago, Thomas is eager to deepen his understanding of the American child welfare system, particularly how it differs from Europe’s.
Something that surprised him about the U.S. system so far is the complexity. Thomas says, “You have to take into account the different levels—federal, state, county, city—which can be confusing for a foreigner.” Despite the learning curve, Thomas finds the CASA program particularly inspiring because of its engagement of volunteers who are focused on what’s “in the best interest” of the children they work with.
Why AmeriCorps?
For Thomas, AmeriCorps offers the perfect blend of hands-on service and professional development. “[It] gives you a sense of belonging within the community,” he explains. “I like the concept of being able to work in the field while learning and having access to educational tools, trainings, and resources.”
Thomas’s advice for anyone who is thinking about a year of service is to consider the impact. He says, “Being part of AmeriCorps means you’re doing something right; you’re doing something good for the community. And that’s the only thing that should matter.”
Fun Fact: A Love for Rugby
When Thomas isn’t working at KIDS MATTER or teaching French online, you might find him watching or playing rugby—a sport that isn’t as common in America. “I have yet to find a league here where I could play once in a while,” he says. (If anyone knows of any local rugby teams in Milwaukee, feel free to reach out and let him know!)
We are so excited to have Thomas on board and can’t wait to see the difference he will make at KIDS MATTER. A warm welcome to the team, Thomas!
